Congratulations to Jac Holzman, the founder of Nonesuch Records and its former parent company Elektra Records, who will be among the inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. Holzman will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award for nonperformer inductees and as such will be represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

“We are pleased to welcome these artists and executives into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman. “They truly represent the variety of people that have defined and continue to influence music and the business of Rock and Roll.”

The 26th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on Monday, March 14, 2011, at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City and will be broadcast on Fuse. Presenters and performers at the induction will be announced at a later date. For more information, visit rockhall.com.

Jac Holzman founded Elektra Records in 1950, initially operating it out of his college dorm room. In 1964, he came up with an idea to create a budget classical music label aimed at the same youthful audience that was buying classic literature in paperback editions and founded Nonesuch Records. Over the years, reports have suggested that the first year's worth of Nonesuch releases generated sufficient income to help support the pop side of Elektra and enable Holzman to sign such acts as the Doors and Love. At the very least, the fledgling Nonesuch was successful enough to prompt major label competitors to embark on their own similarly high concept / low budget classical lines for young consumers. "One of my favorite music labels has a momentous birthday: Nonesuch Records is turning 60 this year," says Deepa Fernandes, co-host of NPR's Here & Now, who spoke with Nonesuch President David Bither to mark the occasion. "Nonesuch has likely influenced your musical diet even if you didn't know it." "It's very hard to say what is a Nonesuch record," Bither says. "It's not a particular genre, but maybe it represents a particular kind of ambition and originality. There's a passionate audience for the music we've tried to champion." You can hear their conversation and several musical selections from over the years here.
