In a New York Times profile of The Magnetic Fields' "musical polymath" Stephin Merritt for the group's new record, Distortion, Melena Ryzik reports of the aspirations of this songwriter, known for his "bitterly smart lyricism," to be "'lumped in with Irving Berlin'" and included as a contemporary of Stephen Sondheim. In the article, Jon Nakagaw, a producer of contemporary programming at Lincoln Center, calls Stephin's work "pop in the best sense of that word.”
