The Wire returns to HBO for its fifth and final season starting tonight, giving viewers one last chance to experience the show the New York Times' Alessandra Stanley calls "unquestionably one of the best and most original series on television in decades." Perhaps now there will also be a chance to correct the omission Stanley sees in that "the series's creators never received the acclaim their work deserves."
For all The Wire's "Dickensian" complexity, Stanley says that "it's also a hoot." She writes:
It is one of the most intimate and alarming depictions of urban America on television, and yet it's an invigorating and even exhilarating experience, each season a new Harry Potter for adults ... [B]y leaving nothing out it offers viewers as close a chance as anyone can get to everything.
