The Low Anthem joins an all–Rhode Islander line-up for a hometown gig at Providence's Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel tonight, with touring partner Elvis Perkins in Dearland and Deer Tick. The Providence Journal writes that all three bands "have all spent significant time in the Ocean State, and they’re all riding a wave of critical and professional success. Of the three, The Low Anthem may have the most to brag about," after being "a hit at last month’s SXSW conference" and signing to Nonesuch. MOJO has booked the band for a special set in London and writes, "Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, with its meld of lush Americana and blues stompers, is already set to be one of the key new releases of 2009."

The Low Anthem returns to their hometown of Providence for a very much Rhode Island–influenced line-up in tonight's hometown gig at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel, with touring partner Elvis Perkins in Dearland and Deer Tick. Providence Journal pop music writer Rick Massimo previews the show by taking an in-depth look the three bands' local connections and the common thread shared among them.

All three "have all spent significant time in the Ocean State, and they’re all riding a wave of critical and professional success," writes Massimo. "Of the three, The Low Anthem may have the most to brag about. Not only were they a hit at last month’s SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, they signed last month to Nonesuch Records, the home of erudite and enormous rock stars such as Wilco, Emmylou Harris and The Black Keys."

Read the article, which also features a discussion with Low Anthem band member Jeff Prystowsky about the June 9 Nonesuch release of Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, at projo.com. The album can be pre-ordered now in the Nonesuch Store.

After a recent performance at the Flynn Center in Burlington, Vermont, in which The Low Anthem opened for Ray LaMontagne, Burlington Free Press staff writer Brent Hallenback wrote, "I really like [LaMontagne's] opening act, The Low Anthem, who put on a great set displaying their ability to create Vic Chesnutt-like moody folk while occasionally rocking out big time. They're out of Providence, RI, and just signed to Wilco's label, Nonesuch, so look for more from these guys." Read more at burlingtonfreepress.com.

And speaking of more, this Saturday, The Low Anthem returns to Burlington for another show, this time with Elvis Perkins, at Higher Ground.

The band recently added a special MOJO Club date to their already hectic tour schedule, at Union Chapel on June 23, courtesy of MOJO magazine. "Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, with its meld of lush Americana and blues stompers, is already set to be one of the key new releases of 2009," predicts MOJO's Ross Bennett.

Bennett quotes MOJO's Editor-In-Chief Phil Alexander, who reported from the band's recent SxSW show, a video of which is now available on nonesuch.com/media, and says their sound is "based on intimacy, quiet charm and melody ... The Low Anthem are truly songwriters and instrumentalists. Theirs is a gloriously romantic vision of America that sits somewhere between Dylan and Waits."

American Railroad, the new album from the Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens, is out now. It is the culmination of four years of research, collaboration, and music-making, having brought Silkroad artists all across the US to uncover and uplift stories of those who built the transcontinental railroad and connecting railways across North America. "The result is a tapestry of stories, traditions, and music that have shaped our multifaceted cultural identity, and that must be heard and recognized," Giddens says. Also out now are a performance video of the track "Mahk Jchi" and the first episode of the American Railroad podcast series. The US fall tour continues to November 23.
