The South by Southwest (SXSW) Music and Media conference got under way in Austin, Texas, last Friday with the interactive and film portions of the multimedia event kicking things off. Today marks the start of the SXSW Music Conference, when thousands of bands and music lovers from all over the world descend on the live-music capital for several days of non-stop music making. Nonesuch artists will be well represented among them, with several performances throughout the week from Punch Brothers, Dr. John, and The Low Anthem.
Punch Brothers make their inaugural SXSW appearance in full force, playing eight free shows over three days, starting Wednesday evening with a performance at the Billy Reid & K-Swiss Shindig, presented by American Songwriter magazine, at The Swan Dive at 615 Red River Street; the band is scheduled to go on at 5:30 PM Austin time (CT).
Later that day, Punch Brothers perform at the first of their four official SXSW showcases when they join fellow Warner Music Group artists at The Warner Sound showcase at La Zona Rosa at 612 West 4th Street; the band goes on at 9 PM CT. Also performing at The Warner Sound showcase Wednesday night is Dr. John, whose set may include songs from his Dan Auerbach-produced Nonesuch debut album, Locked Down, due out April 3. Dr. John and his band take the stage at 11:40 PM CT. Fans across the globe can catch all the action from The Warner Sound event as it streams live at youtube.com/thewarnersound.
On Thursday, Punch Brothers start a full day of music making early with a 10 AM set at The Four Seasons at 98 San Jacinto Boulevard for KUT Live with NPR member station KUT. At 2 PM, they head over to Stubb's BBQ at 801 Red River Street for the Red Light x Day Light Party. (Click here to RSVP by e-mail.) After an afternoon of BBQ, it's two official SXSW showcases: IFC Crossroads House at Vice, at 302 East 6th Street, at 9 PM; and Americana Music Association at Antone's at 213 West 5th Street at 11 PM.
Punch Brothers close out their SXSW stay with a visit to the WFUV Day Stage on the second floor of the Austin Convention Center for the official Radio Day Stage showcase. The band recently stopped by the studios of WFUV, the New York member-supported public radio station, to talk with host Claudia Marshall and perform a number of songs, which you can hear and watch at wfuv.org. Punch Brothers play their final SXSW set at The Stage on Sixth at 508 East 6th Street, presented by Sennheiser and Paste magazine at 4:30 PM. The band will return to Austin soon enough with a headlining set at Antone's on May 2.
As noted earlier today in the Nonesuch Journal, The Low Anthem will be making a return appearance at the conference with a performance at the official SXSW showcase at ACL Live at The Moody Theater on Thursday evening at 7 PM. They will be followed by Alejandro Escovedo and The Sensitive Boys and another band soon to be announced.
