Punch Brothers' fall tour is headed to the University of Michigan's Power Center in Ann Arbor tonight. Though the band's 2008 Nonesuch debut, Punch, also marks the band's first as Punch Brothers, "they’ve already made their mark on the newgrass/new-acoustic scene," says AnnArbor.com in an interview with fiddler Gabe Witcher, "as they’ve created their own, unique variation on that ambitious hybrid of bluegrass, jazz and classical-music elements."

Punch Brothers' fall tour is headed to the University of Michigan's Power Center in Ann Arbor tonight, following a successful swing through the South over the past week.

Although the band's 2008 Nonesuch debut, Punch, also marks the band's first as Punch Brothers, "they’ve already made their mark on the newgrass/new-acoustic scene," says Ann Arbor's Kevin Ransom, "as they’ve created their own, unique variation on that ambitious hybrid of bluegrass, jazz and classical-music elements."

Ransom spoke with Gabe Witcher, Punch Brothers' fiddler, in a preview of tonight's event. Witcher explains a bit of the band's history and how that has influenced the unique style of music making, "doing the newgrass sound, but using a classical-music compositional approach." This can be heard on the centerpiece to Punch, The Blind Leaving the Blind, a work in four movements composed by mandolinist/singer/songwriter Chris Thile, and, then, in the album's other pieces, composed collaboratively by the band.
