Randy Newman performs three song off his newly release Songbook Vol. 2 on BBC Two's Later ... with Jools Holland tonight: "Birmingham," "Laugh and Be Happy," and "Same Girl." Newman posed on the set for the photo at left with fellow guest Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks. He appeared on the BBC World Service show The Strand last night and is on BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris Sunday this weekend. Newman performs on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Monday; enter to win up-close seats to the NYC performance.

Randy Newman's Songbook Vol. 2 was released earlier this week on Nonesuch. On the new album, to which the Daily Mail gives a perfect five stars, Newman takes a fresh look at both classic and more recent work in new solo takes on 16 of his celebrated songs, surveying 40 years of recordings. Newman performs his song "Birmingham," featured on the new album, on Later Live ... with Jools Holland on BBC Two, starting at 10 PM BST tonight. He then performs two more album tracks, "Laugh and Be Happy" and "Same Girl," on Later ... with Jools Holland, and talks with Holland about the new album starting at 11:50 PM. Also on this week's episodes are Brian Wilson, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Arctic Monkeys, and more. Newman posed with Wilson and famed composer/arranger Van Dyke Parks on the Later set in the picture at left.

Randy Newman appeared on the BBC World Service arts program The Strand last night. He spoke with presenter Mark Coles about his new album and performed excerpts from some of his songs. The BBC describes Newman as "one of America's best known, most successful singer songwriters ... [k]nown as a writer of witty acerbic zeitgeist-capturing songs." You can listen to the program at bbc.co.uk.

Newman is also the guest on BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris Sunday, which airs starting at midnight Saturday night. He speaks with Harris and performs the first of four session tracks, recorded especially for the show. The second part will air in next week’s show.

    Composer and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s honey from a winter stone is out January 17, 2025, on Nonesuch Records. The album, which Ambrose calls a “self-portrait,” features improvisational vocalist Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic on synthesizer, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos Quartet. Akinmusire says, “In many respects this entire work is inspired by and is an homage to the work of the composer Julius Eastman and his organic music concept."     Nonesuch releases a deluxe edition of Wilco’s 2004 Grammy Award–winning album A Ghost Is Born on February 7, 2025. The box set comprises either nine vinyl LPs and four CDs or nine CDs—including the original album, alternates, outtakes, and demos, charting the making of A Ghost Is Born—plus the complete 2004 concert recording from Boston’s Wang Center and the band’s “fundamentals” workshop sessions. It includes sixty-five previously unreleased music tracks as well as a forty-eight-page hardcover book with previously unpublished photos and a new liner note by Grammy-winning writer Bob Mehr. An alternate version of “Handshake Drugs,” recorded during the studio sessions at New York’s Sear Sound, twenty-one years ago this month, is out now. There will also be a new vinyl pressing of the original album in a two-disc package, and a two-CD expanded version of the original album with bonus track highlights from the full deluxe edition repertoire. The two-CD version will also be available on streaming services worldwide.
