Randy Newman fans in the UK who had hoped to see the singer-songwriter perform this month are in luck. Though he was forced to postpone the European leg of his Harps and Angels tour this month due to severe back pain, Randy was able to tape a special concert for BBC Four Sessions this summer at LSO St. Lukes that debuts tonight. Time Out calls it "essential viewing for fans, but also worthwhile for those who haven't heard anything beyond his work with Disney." The Calgary Herald picks Randy's new album as CD of the Week, calling its songs "tuneful and interesting on so many levels."

Randy Newman fans in the UK who had hoped to see the singer-songwriter perform this month are in luck. Though he was forced to postpone the European leg of his Harps and Angels tour this month due to severe back pain, Randy was able to tape a special concert for BBC Four Sessions this past summer at LSO St. Lukes that will debut on that station tonight at 11:45 PM GMT. He is accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra for this intimate event, which Time Out calls "essential viewing for fans, but also worthwhile for those who haven't heard anything beyond his work with Disney."

For a preview, or for those who aren't able to tune in to the show, bbc.co.uk now features a video interview with Randy and exclusive web-only video from the concert of Randy performing "Emotional Girl" and "I'm Dead but I Don't Know It."

At left is a photo of a rather relaxed Randy from the rehearsal for the show.

The Calgary Herald names Harps and Angels its CD of the Week, with reviewer Jan Randall writing:

Randy Newman is in a category all his own ... Newman's New Orleans roots are never far from any of his songs, yet he still achieves a wide range both in his vast body of work and on his latest release, Harps and Angels.

Randall sums up the album's tunes as "tuneful and interesting on so many levels."

"Here you have the guy who is speaking to the universality of the human experience in every molecule," Ken Burns tells Walter Isaacson on PBS's Amanpour & Co. about the subject of his latest film, Leonardo da Vinci. Sarah Burns, his co-director on the film with David McMahon, adds: "I think it's entirely central to who Leonardo was, that he had these interests across such a wide spectrum, and he didn't see those things as being separate. To him, all of these things were related and part of his larger effort to just understand the universe and everything he could about the human experience, the human body, and how all of these things are connected." You can watch their conversation here. You can watch LEONARDO da VINCI on PBS and hear Caroline Shaw's original score now.

"The most relentlessly curious person I've ever come across, and that kind of wonder, that kind of joy, that kind of excitement about learning, we can use a lot of now," Ken Burns says of Leonardo da Vinci, the subject of his latest film, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Burns was on The Today Show as well, talking with host Hoda Kotb about the film. You can watch both conversations here and listen to Burns and his fellow directors Sarah Burns and David McMahon on Design Matters with Debbie Millman.
