Friday’s show was covered in a four-star review by the Daily Telegraph, who called the concert “a moving and powerful experience.” Writer Matthew Magee writes that “the songs came at a startling rate, even unfamiliar ones sounding somehow as if they had always existed. Tunes seemed natural and inevitable and words tumbled out like conversation that just happened to match perfectly the rhythms of the melodies.” Read the full review here.
In another four-star review, the Scotsman refers to Newman as “an artist whose songs and subjects remain ageless,“ and notes that "the complexity of the silver-curled troubadour’s songs was endearingly masked by an occasionally untuned voice and deceptively simple arrangements.” Read more here.
The Herald in Scotland’s Hugh Macdonald reviews the concert as well, calling Newman’s work “miniature symphonies of wit and wisdoms ... songs that can be crudely described as hymns to loss and longing.” Read more here.
