Rhiannon Giddens's album Tomorrow Is My Turn is among NPR Music's 25 Favorite Albums of 2015 (So Far). "The first thought that takes over during a listen to Rhiannon Giddens' solo debut is: This woman can sing anything," exclaims NPR. "Stop marveling for a moment and this impeccably constructed, hotly executed collection reveals the brain and soul that feed the extraordinary voice." She kicks off a European tour in London on Tuesday. Also on the list is the debut album from Congolese band Mbongwana Star, From Kinshasa. The album, a World Circuit release distributed in North America by Nonesuch, "is at once earthy and totally futuristic," says NPR. "[Y]ou hear the band's metamorphic power throttling straight into the fringes of the great beyond."
Rhiannon Giddens's debut solo album, Tomorrow Is My Turn, which was recently named to Rolling Stone's list of the 45 Best Albums of 2015 So Far, has now been named among NPR Music's 25 Favorite Albums of 2015 (So Far).
"The first thought that takes over during a listen to Rhiannon Giddens' solo debut is: This woman can sing anything," exclaims NPR's Ann Powers. "Stop marveling for a moment and this impeccably constructed, hotly executed collection reveals the brain and soul that feed the extraordinary voice ... Giddens' deeply personal interpretations of songs made famous by Patsy Cline, the mezzo-soprano Florence Quivar, Elizabeth Cotten, Odetta and others strip away the tired truisms smothering our understanding of musical history. In the hands of this young master, stories that seemed beyond refreshing shine, renewed."
To pick up a copy of Tomorrow Is My Turn, head to iTunes or the Nonesuch Store, where CD and vinyl orders include a download of the complete album at checkout. Giddens kicks off a European tour at Islington Assembly Hall in London on Tuesday; for tour details and tickets, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
Also on the list of NPR Music's 25 Favorite Albums of 2015 (So Far), as well as Rolling Stone's list of the 45 Best Albums of 2015 So Far, is the debut album from the Congolese seven-piece band Mbongwana Star, From Kinshasa. The "commingling of Congolese street music and electronic sounds" on the album, a World Circuit release distributed in North America by Nonesuch, "is at once earthy and totally futuristic," says NPR's Anastasia Tsioulcas. "[Y]ou hear the band's metamorphic power throttling straight into the fringes of the great beyond."
To pick up a copy of From Kinshasa, head to iTunes or the Nonesuch Store in North America and the World Circuit Shop outside of North America.
"2015 is going to end up being a great year for music," says NPR in its introduction of the list. "There's enormous ambition on display here ... Let's hope the second half of 2015 lives up to it."
