Ry Cooder's monthlong tour with Nick Lowe through Japan, New Zealand, and Australia came to a close last night in Perth. The Age, in its review of the Melbourne show, describes Cooder as "the slide-guitar messiah." The Sydney Morning Herald reports from the Sydney set that his "guitar playing was of subtle beauty and effortlessness. Elegance and class all round on stage, actually." Cooder performs next as a guest of The Chieftans at Glasgow's Celtic Connections festival in January.

Ry Cooder's monthlong tour with Nick Lowe, drummer Joachim Cooder, and special guest vocalist Juliette Commagere through Japan, New Zealand, and Australia came to a close last night in a performance at Perth's Riverside Theatre. The tour began in Nagoya, Japan, on November 4, and wound its way through Tokyo, Osaka, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne, before stopping in Perth.

The Age, in its review of the first of two concerts at Melbourne's Palais Theatre last weekend, describes Cooder as "the slide-guitar messiah."

"We should be thankful that we even got the chance to hear one of the true guitar masters weave his magic again," exclaims reviewer Patrick Donovan writes. "[T]his reviewer's highlight came as Cooder was tuning up and struck a brief—but devastatingly beautiful—riff from his haunting Paris, Texas soundtrack."

Earlier last week, the tour stopped in Sydney for two nights at the State Theatre. The Sydney Morning Herald's Bernard Zuel reviews the first show, saying that Cooder and Lowe's styles, while different, "comfortably complemented each other."

Lowe and Cooder's son Joachim, offered a backing band that "didn't seem to lack for anything to these ears," says Zuel, "but it was clear that for both Lowe and the audience it was Cooder who was the centrepiece."

The reviewer explains that, whatever the song, from whichever period of Cooder's career, "the guitar playing was of subtle beauty and effortlessness. Elegance and class all round on stage, actually."

Rouse Hill Times writer Steve Moffatt was there as well and describes Cooder as "the consummate musician’s musician, a guitarist whose trademark slide solos etch into your soul." Moffatt goes on to say that, through all the musical styles and regions of the world Cooder has explored, he as done so "always in his own way and with a voice that cajoles, moves and shakes you by turns and puts over a tale like few others can."
