Shawn Colvin begins a four-night residency at Yoshi's in San Francisco tonight. Part of a larger tour across the United States, this week's sets take on added meaning as they mark a return to the site where Colvin's recent Nonesuch release, Live, was recorded. The album was captured over three nights of solo performances at the famed Oakland jazz club's new San Francisco location in July 2008. It features 15 tracks culled from throughout the singer/songwriter/guitarist's career, from These Four Walls, her latest studio album and her first for Nonesuch, going back to her 1989 major-label debut, Steady On, as well as Colvin's take on songs by the likes of Gnarls Barkley and Talking Heads.

MusicOMH, in its four-star review of the album, asserted that "a live album is long overdue" from Shawn Colvin. "[T]his career-spanning selection of songs could easily be a wish list for any fan, but also serves as fine introduction to a singer-songwriter who is frequently mentioned in the same breath as James Taylor, Lucinda Williams and Joni Mitchell." No Depression sees the collection as "a terrific career overview," one confirming that "Colvin is a solo-acoustic performer of stratospheric skill."

American Railroad, the new album from the Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens, is out now. It is the culmination of four years of research, collaboration, and music-making, having brought Silkroad artists all across the US to uncover and uplift stories of those who built the transcontinental railroad and connecting railways across North America. "The result is a tapestry of stories, traditions, and music that have shaped our multifaceted cultural identity, and that must be heard and recognized," Giddens says. Also out now are a performance video of the track "Mahk Jchi" and the first episode of the American Railroad podcast series. The US fall tour continues to November 23.
