The Black Keys have been named an Artist of the Year by SPIN magazine! "The Black Keys are closing out a year that saw their sixth album, Brothers—a dark, swampy, R&B-inspired stomper—become an indisputable hit," says SPIN in the cover story on the band. Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach discuss the making of the album and the unprecedented response the band received upon the album's release. "We had no idea what to expect," says Auerbach. "All we knew was that we felt we had made the best record we could and were pretty excited about that." SPIN has also named Brothers to the magazine's list of the 40 Best Albums of 2010 and "Tighten Up" to its list of the 20 Best Songs of 2010.

The Black Keys have been named an Artist of the Year by SPIN magazine! "The Black Keys are closing out a year that saw their sixth album, Brothers—a dark, swampy, R&B-inspired stomper—become an indisputable hit," writes SPIN's Amanda Petrusich in her cover story on the band.

Band mates Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach talk to Petrusich about the making of the album in storied Muscle Shoals, the unprecedented response the band received upon the album's release, and how life has changed since.

"We had no idea what to expect," says Auerbach. "All we knew was that we felt we had made the best record we could and were pretty excited about that."

You can read an excerpt of the cover story at spin.com and read the complete story in the latest issue of the magazine, along with additional photos by Daniel Jackson, who took the cover shot at left.

SPIN has named Brothers to the magazine's list of the 40 Best Albums of 2010, saying: "Their modestly grungy garage is now a cavernous expanse with room for pop-funk action ('Tighten Up'), keyboard fairy dust ('Too Afraid to Love You'), and a stirring cover of Jerry Butler's Philly soul classic 'Never Gonna Give You Up.'" Read that list here.

The magazine also named "Tighten Up" to its list of the 20 Best Songs of 2010, asserting that, ahem, "Dan Auerbach's grainy, nuanced croon and unassuming, scene-setting guitar show precisely why John Mayer sucks." You'll find the Top 20 list here.

Earlier this year, The Black Keys helped SPIN celebrate its 25th anniversary with a concert at Terminal 5 in New York City. Excerpts from the show were recently broadcast on Fuse. You can watch their performance of "Next Girl" here.

To pick up a copy of Brothers, head to the Nonesuch Store, where the CD and LP are now 33% off as part of the store's 3rd anniversary sale.

The Way Out of Easy, the first album from guitarist Jeff Parker and his long-running ETA IVtet—saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Jay Bellerose—since their 2022 debut Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy, which Pitchfork named one of the Best Albums of the 2020s So Far, is out now on International Anthem / Nonesuch Records. Like that album, The Way Out of Easy comprises recordings from LA venue ETA, where Parker and the ensemble held a weekly residency for seven years. During that time, the ETA IVtet evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form journeys into innovative, groove-oriented improvised music. All four tracks on The Way Out of Easy come from a single night in 2023, providing an unfiltered view of the ensemble, fully in their element.

The Staves' new EP Happy New Year, out today, includes three acoustic versions of tracks from their new album, All Now—"I Don't Say It, But I Feel It," "After School," and "All Now"—and a cover of The Beatles' "She's Leaving Home." Also out now: an acoustic performance video for "After School," which the duo calls "a love song to our sister Emily inspired by the bands we were listening to in the '90s. Putting on the rose-tinted glasses and embracing nostalgia."
