Tonight, Stephen Sondheim will be at the O'Neill Theater Center's 2010 Monte Cristo Award Dinner to present the award to famed director/producer Hal Prince. Tonight's gala events include a reception, gala dinner and award presentation, and performance at Bridgewaters in New York City's South Stree Seaport. The two theater legends have worked together for more than half a century, going back to the original production of West Side Story, for which Sondheim wrote the lyrics and which Prince produced. Prince went on to direct and produce the original Broadway productions of Sondheim's A Little Night Music, Company, Follies, Pacific Overtures, and Merrily We Roll Along and directed the original Broadway production of Sweeney Todd. Proceeds from tonight's event will support the O'Neill's many theater development programs.

Sondheim himself is set to receive the first-ever SAGE Lifetime Achievement in Theatre Award next Wednesday, April 14, in a reception at Brasserie Cognac in New York City, followed by a performance of the new musical retrospective Sondheim on Sondheim at Studio 54. Proceeds from the event will benefit SAGE, Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders. For more information, visit sageusa.org.

Earlier that week, on Monday, April 12, Angela Lansbury will receive the inaugural Stephen Sondheim Award from the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia. The award, established last year, will be presented at a black-tie Gala Benefit at the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bernadette Peters will be evening's honorary hosts. The event includes tribute performances from Jason Danieley, Sherri L. Edelen, Victor Garber, and Marin Mazzie, and will benefit Signature Theatre’s artistic, education, and community outreach programs.

Stephen Sondheim has stated, "Angela Lansbury's first appearance on the musical stage was in a show called Anyone Can Whistle, for which I wrote the score. That appearance was a gift to the musical theater, although perhaps not such a gift to her, since the show only ran for nine performances. I am thrilled that Signature Theatre is helping me make it up to her by giving her the first Stephen Sondheim Award.”

Rhiannon Giddens reunites with her former Carolina Chocolate Drops bandmate Justin Robinson on What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow, due April 18. Produced by Giddens and Joseph "joebass" DeJarnette, the album features Giddens on banjo and Robinson on fiddle, playing eighteen of their favorite North Carolina tunes. Many were learned from their late mentor, legendary North Carolina Piedmont musician Joe Thompson; one is from another musical hero, the late Etta Baker. Giddens and Robinson recorded outdoors at Thompson’s and Baker’s North Carolina homes, as well as the former plantation Mill Prong House, accompanied by the sounds of nature, including two different broods of cicadas, which had not emerged simultaneously since 1803, creating a true once-in-a-lifetime soundscape. A video of “Hook and Line,” a traditional tune from Joe Thompson’s repertoire and filmed at his home in Mebane, NC, may be seen here. The duo, along with four other string musicians, embarks on Rhiannon Giddens & The Old-Time Revue Tour April 25.

Composer and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s album honey from a winter stone, which he calls a “self-portrait,” is out now. It features improvisational vocalist Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic on synthesizer, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos Quartet. “For arguably the most technically gifted trumpeter of his generation, a lot of Ambrose Akinmusire’s breakthroughs actually come from letting go of standards and structures," says the New York Times. "Lately Akinmusire has been making some of the most intimate, spellbinding music of his career.”
