The film, a tribute to the renowned Canadian singer-songwriter, features her children Rufus and Martha Wainwright, her sisters Anna and Jane, and talented friends including Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Jimmy Fallon, and Antony.
Sing Me the Songs, which made its world premiere at Sundance London in 2012 and had a theatrical run earlier this summer, is among the 15 independent films that will make their digital debut this fall through a variety of platforms and storefronts, via the Artist Services program, which provides access to self-distribution for artists supported by the Sundance Institute. Titles will be available on a variety of platforms, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Microsoft Xbox, Sony Entertainment Network, SundanceNOW, VUDU, and YouTube. On June 25, 2013, Nonesuch Records released Sing Me the Songs: Celebrating the Works of Kate McGarrigle, which features highlights from the New York tribute concerts at The Town Hall as well as those held in London and Toronto after McGarrigle died of sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in 2010.
Proceeds from the concerts provided seed money for the Kate McGarrigle Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money in the fight against sarcoma and also to preserving her legacy through the arts. Net proceeds from the sale of the Sing Me the Songs album also will be donated to the Foundation. The double-disc set was produced by Joe Boyd, who curated the concerts, and features performances by Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Anna McGarrigle, Emmylou Harris, Antony, Norah Jones, and Teddy Thompson, among others.
