With the Sweeney Todd soundtrack out in just over a week, it's no wonder the Chicago Tribune is saying that "the highly anticipated holiday movie season brings with it not just some of the best movies of the year but some of the most distinctive score soundtracks as well." Writes Richard Knight Jr.: "This is a great finale to what has been a signature year for soundtrack lovers," not least "an intimate, seductive Sweeney Todd."

And Sweeney Todd is first among the noteworthy soundtracks Knight lists in the year-end boon. He points in particular to the film's star, Johnny Depp, who "possesses an expressive light tenor, and he growls, entices and belts it out as called for (the end of 'A Little Priest' number is a highlight)."
For Knight, Depp's acting choices and the Stephen Sondheim–approved changes to the score—"gorgeously arranged and played"—only enhance the "star turns by Depp, [Helena] Bonham Carter, and Sacha Baron Cohen ... The result is an intimate, seductive Sweeney Todd, with as much emphasis on atmosphere and personality as voice."
