The Black Keys are set to close out what's been a banner year with a return to Chicago for sold-out New Year's Eve shows. Last year, bandmates Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney rang in the new year with two nights at the Riviera. This time around, the band plays not two but three sold-out shows at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom December 30 and 31 and January 1. The Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot spoke with Carney and takes a look at all that's happened since those Riviera shows in what Kot calls their "breakthrough year."

The Black Keys are set to close out what's been a banner year in a way similar to how it began, with a return to Chicago for sold-out New Year's Eve shows. Last year, bandmates Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney rang in the new year with two nights at the Riviera. This time around, though, the band plays not two but three sold-out shows at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom December 30 and 31 and January 1. The Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot spoke with Carney and takes a look at all that's happened since those Riviera shows in what Kot calls their "breakthrough year," noting what a difference a year makes. You can read the piece in Kot's Turn It Up blog at chicagotribune.com.

As recently noted in the Nonesuch Journal, just a few days after they ring in the new year, The Black Keys will kick off the new season of NBC’s Saturday Night Live as musical guests, with Jim Carrey hosting, on January 8. Later in the month, the band heads to the much warmer climes of the Southern Hemispheric summer for a tour of New Zealand and Australia. They'll both join the Big Day Out festival tour and play a number of side shows along the way.

American Railroad, the new album from the Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens, is out now. It is the culmination of four years of research, collaboration, and music-making, having brought Silkroad artists all across the US to uncover and uplift stories of those who built the transcontinental railroad and connecting railways across North America. "The result is a tapestry of stories, traditions, and music that have shaped our multifaceted cultural identity, and that must be heard and recognized," Giddens says. Also out now are a performance video of the track "Mahk Jchi" and the first episode of the American Railroad podcast series. The US fall tour continues to November 23.
