Kronos Quartet's forthcoming Nonesuch release, available at the Nonesuch Store on Tuesday, features pipa virtuoso Wu Man joining the Quartet on Terry Riley's The Cusp of Magic. It's not her first foray with the group. Kronos was an early supporter of hers following her emigration to the States from China. The performers premiered Tan Dan's Ghost Opera together in 1995. That's when Wu Man and Riley, who was in the audience, first decided to embarked on their own collaborative relationship, one that would mirror the one he has developed with Kronos over many years. These partnerships are among the many, varied artistic ventures she's undertaken that the Guardian's Michael Church examines in his profile of the pipa player to whom he attributes "brilliant finger-picking, machine-gun tremolos and ferocious strumming."
