With the band's US tour set to start tomorrow in upstate New York, and three performances lined up for New York City next week—two sold-out concerts in Central Park for SummerStage and a late-night set at Terminal 5—Time Out New York selects The Black Keys for the Top Live Show (or, rather, shows) for the week.
Time Out's Sophie Harris spoke with the band, whom she discovers to be without all the traditional trappings one might expect from the "yowling, sweaty rock & roll band" they are. She says "there’s a realness to what the Black Keys do, along with a lack of pretension that sets them apart from pretty much every other act in Billboard’s top ten (Brothers entered the chart at No. 3)."
Harris finds the music of Brothers to represent an evolution in the band's sound, adding "woozy psychedelia, soul and glam rock" to the mix, along with influences from their recent Blakroc collaboration with a who's who of hip-hop emcees
Auerbach tells Harris the story behind the album's title and how fitting it is. "Like everything else on the record, it just happened naturally," he says. "It sums up the record and pretty much our career up to this point—that it’s all about the bond that Pat and I have, the unspoken connection and the shared vision. Do we feel lucky? Extremely."
