"Chaps, what took you so long?" asks Times (UK) chief film critic James Christopher now that he's seen the result of pairing director Tim Burton with Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. "It was screamingly obvious what a gorgeous couple you would make when the curtain lifted," writes Christopher in his four-star movie review. "I’ve rarely seen a film director so perfectly matched to a musical ... Burton was put on earth to shoot this glorious melodrama."
Christopher has further praise for Burton's "brilliant editing" choices in adapting the original material and lauds his choice of stars for the film, calling the "musical chemistry" between Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter "terrific." There's also a "priceless cameo" from Sacha Baron Cohen and the "sinister pleasure" of Alan Rickman's supporting role.
All in all, there's "something for everyone."
