Timo Andres, whose new album, Home Stretch, was released yesterday, performed music from and discussed the new album on WNYC's Soundcheck. "Brian Eno and Mozart are two names one may not expect to be paired up," says Soundcheck. "Yet pianist and composer Timo Andres counts Eno and Mozart among his influences, and has found a way to couple them. On his new album, Home Stretch, Andres plays off of works by both of those composers, matching his reinventions of those pieces with a composition of his own. The result is a buoyant and fascinating record." Listen to the Soundcheck episode here.
Timo Andres, whose new album, Home Stretch, was released yesterday on Nonesuch Records, marked the occasion by stopping by the studios of New York public radio station WNYC to perform some music from Home Stretch on Soundcheck and talk with host John Schaefer about the new album.
"Brian Eno and Mozart are two names one may not expect to be paired up," Soundcheck suggests. "Yet pianist and composer Timo Andres counts Eno and Mozart among his influences, and has found a way to couple them. On his new album, Home Stretch, Andres plays off of works by both of those composers, matching his reinventions of those pieces with a composition of his own. The result is a buoyant and fascinating record."
On Home Stretch, Andres pairs the newly composed title work with two reinventions of works by musical heroes Mozart and Eno: Mozart "Coronation" Concerto Re-Composition, described by The New Yorker's Alex Ross as "mesmerizing," and Paraphrase on Themes of Brian Eno. New York City-based chamber orchestra Metropolis Ensemble, led by conductor Andrew Cyr, performs with the composer on piano.

Later in the day, Andres celebrated the release of the new album with a special event at the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe in New York City last night featuring a discussion with Andres, artist/book designer Peter Mendslund, and The New Yorker's Leo Carey, about the "anxiety of influences" and the ways in which the artists' hope to remain faithful to a tradition while making it their own. Andres also offered illustrative musical examples at the piano.
