True Grit has been nominated for a remarkable 10 Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay for Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, Lead Actor for Jeff Bridges, and Supporting Actress for Hailee Steinfeld. Composer Carter Burwell's score for True Grit, which was ineligible due to a technicality, earns five stars from Audiophile Audition. "With evocative radiance, majestic landscapes and human drama are captured with plaintive beauty ... A memorable movie will invariably have a memorable soundtrack." True Grit was recently nominated for eight BAFTA Film Awards.

The nominations are in for the 83rd Academy Awards, honoring the best in film, and True Grit has been nominated for a remarkable 10 awards. The film, based on the 1968 Charles Portis novel of the same name, has been nominated for Best Motion Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay for Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, Lead Actor for Jeff Bridges, Supporting Actress for Hailee Steinfeld, Cinematography for Roger Deakins, Art Direction Costume Design, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing.

Composer Carter Burwell's score for True Grit was not eligible for an award nomination due to an Academy technicality, which, says the Los Angeles Times, is a "shame, as Burwell’s work on True Grit is some of his grandest to date."

The True Grit soundtrack album includes 20 short original works by Burwell, featuring excerpts from the gospel hymns “Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand," “What a Friend We Have in Jesus," “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms," “Talk About Suffering," and “The Glory-Land Way." Digital versions of the album, including the free MP3s that come with Nonesuch Store orders of the CD, contain a bonus track: Iris DeMent’s rendition of “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” which plays during the film’s closing credits. To pick up a copy, head to the Nonesuch Store now.

Audiophile Audition gives the soundtrack album five stars. "With evocative radiance, majestic landscapes and human drama are captured with plaintive beauty," writes reviewer Robbie Gerson. "Elegiac renditions of acoustic piano music (also poignantly effective in Ken Burns PBS series on the Civil War) are moving, delivering pathos and sentiment. The music is not extraneous, but vital to the flow of the movie ... A memorable movie will invariably have a memorable soundtrack." Read the complete review at audaud.com.

The 83rd Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 27, and air live on ABC starting at 8 PM EST / 5 PM PST. For more information, including the complete list of nominees, visit oscar.go.com.

True Grit was recently nominated in many of the same categories for the BAFTA Film Awards, Britain's Oscars equivalent: Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actor for Bridges, Leading Actress for Steinfeld, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Sound. The winners will be announced in a ceremony held on Sunday, February 13, and broadcast on the BBC in the UK. For more information, visit bafta.org.

David Longstreth’s Song of the Earth, a song cycle for orchestra and voices, is due April 4. Performed by Longstreth with his band Dirty Projectors—Felicia Douglass, Maia Friedman, Olga Bell—and the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, conducted by André de Ridder, the album also features Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), Steve Lacy, Patrick Shiroishi, Anastasia Coope, Tim Bernardes, Ayoni, Portraits of Tracy, and the author David Wallace-Wells. Longstreth says that while Song of the Earth—his biggest-yet foray into the field of concert music—"is not a ‘climate change opera,’” he wanted to “find something beyond sadness: beauty spiked with damage. Acknowledgement flecked with hope, irony, humor, rage.”

Composer Steve Reich talks about creating his 1970–71 piece Drumming—which the Village Voice hailed as “the most important work of the whole minimalist music movement"—in a new video from his publisher Boosey & Hawkes. Steve Reich and Musicians gave the world premiere performance of Drumming at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC in December 1971. Their 1987 Nonesuch recording is included in the forthcoming Steve Reich Collected Works, a twenty-seven disc box set, due March 14.
