True Grit—Joel and Ethan Coen's film adaptation of the 1968 Charles Portis novel, starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld—opens in movie theaters across the United States and Canada tomorrow. The film's soundtrack, featuring a score by composer Carter Burwell, a longtime Coen brothers collaborator, is out today and available in the Nonesuch Store.

The soundtrack album includes 20 short original works by Burwell, featuring excerpts from the gospel hymns “Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand," “What a Friend We Have in Jesus," “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms," “Talk About Suffering," and “The Glory-Land Way." Digital versions of the album, including the free MP3s that come with Nonesuch Store orders of the CD, contain a bonus track: Iris DeMent’s rendition of “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” which plays during the film’s closing credits.

Burwell recently spoke with Variety about his process for writing and recording the score and just what makes "Burwell in tune with Coen brothers." You can read that at variety.com. Charles Portis, the purportedly "reclusive" author of the book on which the film is based, is the subject of a profile in the Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog, which you can read at wsj.com.

True Grit
has been nominated for 11 Critics' Choice Awards and six Chicago Film Critics Awards, including Best Score nominations for Burwell from both, and is set to open the Berlin International Film Festival in February. The Way Out of Easy, the first album from guitarist Jeff Parker and his long-running ETA IVtet—saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Jay Bellerose—since their 2022 debut Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy, which Pitchfork named one of the Best Albums of the 2020s So Far, is out now on International Anthem / Nonesuch Records. Like that album, The Way Out of Easy comprises recordings from LA venue ETA, where Parker and the ensemble held a weekly residency for seven years. During that time, the ETA IVtet evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form journeys into innovative, groove-oriented improvised music. All four tracks on The Way Out of Easy come from a single night in 2023, providing an unfiltered view of the ensemble, fully in their element.

The album, which Ambrose calls a “self-portrait,” features improvisational vocalist Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic on synthesizer, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos Quartet. Akinmusire says, “In many respects this entire work is inspired by and is an homage to the work of the composer Julius Eastman and his organic music concept." The opening track, “muffled screams,” is out now.
