Muscle Shoals Sound, the historic Alabama studio where The Black Keys recorded their multiple Grammy Award-winning Nonesuch album Brothers, is featured in a new, original video from Oxford American magazine's SoLost video series, which celebrates getting lost in the American South.
As with countless musicians who’d ventured to Muscle Shoals before them, The Black Keys were attracted to the legacy—and the atmosphere—of a studio where everyone from Aretha Franklin to the Rolling Stones had done time. In the latest SoLost video, the series' producer/director Dave Anderson heads to the studio at 3614 Jackson Highway to get a sense of how that legacy was formed and what has come from it over these many years. Anderson does so by tracking down the man in charge, owner Noel Webster, for a fittingly late-night one-on-one.
Webster brought the studio "back to life," writes Anderson, "after it sat defunct for 20 years. He knows the history. He's a master of great analog recordings and the gear that can bring it to life: a kind of musical archeologist who's not only revived the place, but brought back all the equipment to help Muscle Shoals Sound reclaim its original, irreproducible sound."
