Leave Your Sleep, Natalie Merchant's first new album in seven years and her Nonesuch debut, is due out on April 13. For the album, Merchant adapts the works of such poets as Edward Lear, Ogden Nash, and Robert Graves into a musically kaleidoscopic, two-disc set of new songs, working with folk, jazz, reggae, R&B players, and chamber ensembles. Merchant and the album were featured on the BBC World Service program The Strand yesterday, which you can hear online at bbc.co.uk. Now, she offers further insight into the project in a new 10-minute documentary available at nonesuch.com/media.
In The Making of "Leave Your Sleep," Merchant takes viewers on a tour through the album, a labor of love years in the making. She tells the stories of some of the poets whose words she set to music and performs several songs off the album.
"Leave Your Sleep is different from anything I've ever done, in every way," Merchant reveals in the piece. "I don't know if I'll ever be able to accomplish something on this scale again. I'm really looking forward to unleashing it on the world."
