"I didn't know quite what to expect when I started this whole thing, especially making a record with it," says Pat Metheny of his latest project, Orchestrion, and the forthcoming Nonesuch release of the same name. "The result is absolutely nothing like I ever would have imagined." That's from a new video launching today at nonesuch.com/media, in which Pat takes viewers behind the scenes of Orchestrion. Says The Guardian: "The Orchestrion reconciles his love of old-fashioned, unamplified live performance with his restless urge to innovate."

"I didn't know quite what to expect when I started this whole thing, especially making a record with it," says Pat Metheny of his latest project, Orchestrion, and the forthcoming Nonesuch release of the same name. "The result is absolutely nothing like I ever would have imagined."

That's from a new, seven-minute film launching today on the nonesuch.com Media page. In it, the composer-guitarist introduces the project, in which he plays a roomful of remarkable, custom-made instruments through solenoid switches and pneumatics. In this behind-the-scenes video, he walks viewers through the Orchestrion experience, explaining its origins and performing music from his adventurous new “solo” recording. To see it for yourself, visit nonesuch.com/media.

"The Orchestrion reconciles his love of old-fashioned, unamplified live performance with his restless urge to innovate," explains The Guardian's Andrew Purcell in a recent feature on the project. It's also an effort to stir things up in a field that has become entrenched in familiar patterns for far too long. As Metheny tells Purcell: "Jazz guys were always the guys fucking with things. I feel it hasn't been like that for a while." You can read the complete article at guardian.co.uk.

With the album set for release in less than two weeks, time is running out to pre-order Orchestrion in the exclusive Nonesuch Store bundle, which includes a limited-edition 9" x 12" print of the cover image signed by Pat. Pre-order yours now by clicking here.
