Wanda Jackson is back in the United States following a two-week tour of Europe and is set to kick off her months-long US tour, featuring music from her Third Man / Nonesuch Records debut, The Party Ain't Over. She brings her trademark bone-rattling growl to World Cafe Live in Philadelphia tonight, with the Lustre Kings. For fans outside of Philly, tune in to New York City member-supported radio station WFUV, 90.9 FM, tonight at 9 PM ET to hear Jackson talk with music director Rita Houston on Words & Music from Studio A, online at wfuv.org.
The Party Ain't Over, produced by Jack White and recorded in his Nashville studio, features 11 tracks dating in origin from the early 1900s to 2007. The result: an album that showcases Wanda, now in her seventh decade, sounding as charismatic and dynamic as ever. Head to the Nonesuch Store to pick up a copy of The Party Ain't Over on vinyl and CD, with high-quality, 320 kbps MP3s of the album included at checkout.
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Sam Adams, previewing tonight's tour starter, says the songs on Jackson's new White-produced album "are proof of a match made in heaven."
The New York Times recommends this Thursday's sold-out show at the Bowery Ballroom. Times writer Amanda Petrusich says Jackson "still sounds fantastic, and her gnarled, feisty vocals are a good fit with Mr. White’s scrappy production." Read more at nytimes.com.
The San Francisco Chronicle gives Wild Applause to the new album. Jackson "is, now and forever, the Queen of Rockabilly, and she shows it again and again on the album's 11 cuts," exclaims Chronicle reviewer David Wiegand She "has never lost the power she displayed years ago—in fact, she seems to have gotten better with each new CD." Read the complete review at sfgate.com.
The Oklahoman, from Jackson's hometown state, says: "With the new album, Jackson affirms that The Party Ain’t Over, and thanks to White, it is a musical celebration fit for such a queen." Read the article at newsok.com.
Seattle Weekly's Chris Kornelis, looking forward to Jackson's show in that city, says Jackson's collaboration with White "resulted in the best-case scenario for a legend/kid collaboration: a genuinely stunning record that introduces a new crop of appreciators to one of the best of rock's past." Says Kornelis: "Holy damn, is this record a keeper." Read more at seattleweekly.com.
Below are the currently scheduled tour dates. In addition, Jackson is slated to perform at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee, which runs June 9 through 12. For more information and ticket links, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
