Audra McDonald joined her fellow Shuffle Along co-stars Brian Stoke Mitchell and Billy Porter, along with Lin Manuel Miranda, Kelli O'Hara, Michael Cerveris, Joel Grey, Carole King, Bernadette Peters, and scores and scores of fellow members of the Broadway community last week to record the beloved Burt Bacharach / Hal David classic "What the World Needs Now Is Love" for a new charitable initiative, Broadway for Orlando. The song, released by Broadway Records, is now available to purchase at the label's site, BroadwayRecords.com and on iTunes. The recording was made to honor the victims and those wounded in the Orlando shooting massacre at Pulse nightclub. A full 100% of the proceeds from sales of the song will benefit the GLBT Center of Central Florida; additional donations may be made via gaycenter.org.
The project was conceived by SiriusXM radio host Seth Rudetsky and his husband, producer James Wesley. Playbill filmed a music video to accompany the recording, which took place at Avatar Studios in New York and remotely in Los Angeles and Miami. You can watch the video below.
