Guitarist Jeff Parker and his long-running ETA IVtet—saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Jay Bellerose—stopped by the WNYC Studios in New York City to perform on New Sounds' Soundcheck and talk with host John Schaefer about their new album, The Way Out of Easy. They perform a short improvisation as well as "Freakadelic," a song on the new album, live in the studio. You can watch both and hear the full episode below.
The Way Out of Easy is the first album from Jeff Parker and ETA IVtet since their 2022 debut Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy, which Pitchfork named one of the Best Albums of the 2020s So Far. Like that album, The Way Out of Easy comprises recordings from LA venue ETA, where Parker and the ensemble held a weekly residency for seven years. During that time, the ETA IVtet evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form journeys into innovative, groove-oriented improvised music. All four tracks on The Way Out of Easy come from a single night in 2023, providing an unfiltered view of the ensemble, fully in their element. The album is out now on vinyl, CD, and digital download via International Anthem / Nonesuch Records and will be available to stream in full this Friday, December 13. You can get it and hear it here.
Parker and the ETA IVtet were in New York City to perform at Public Records in Brooklyn last week as part of a three-night International Anthem residency. On December 16 & 17, the band will play at Zebulon in Los Angeles, CA. For all the details, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
