Rhiannon Giddens, whose debut solo album, Tomorrow Is My Turn, was released yesterday on Nonesuch Records to critical acclaim, celebrated the record's release with a performance of the song "Waterboy" on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman last night. "Oh my god," Letterman exclaimed following the performance. "Oh my god, that was unbelievable." See for you yourself:

About the song, made famous by Odetta, Giddens has written: "Odetta has been cited as a major influence by folks like Bob Dylan, Bernice Johnson Reagon, and Janis Joplin, among many others. She was a soulful force for good in both the folk world and the civil rights world, and it’s an honor to present her arrangement of this work song–inspired piece. We were both classically trained, and so it was great to be able to let my throat loose!"

Tomorrow Is My Turn, produced by T Bone Burnett, "is a showcase for Ms. Giddens’s glorious voice," says the New York Times. "For all her technical control, her voice is a perpetually soulful marvel." NPR calls it "a scrupulously selected, richly realized collection of songs." Rolling Stone dubs her "one of the most promising voices in American roots music." The Sunday Times of London says she "manages to tap into the emotional core of everything she touches." The Los Angeles Times calls the album "an Americana tour de force in which Giddens demonstrates a musical acumen that spans pop, blues, folk, gospel and classical music."

Tomorrow Is My Turn is "an album that balances warmth, wisdom and authority," says the Wall Street Journal's Jim Fusilli. "A master of expressing the textured humanity in the lyrics and conveying defiance without omitting an undercurrent of fear, Ms. Giddens gives resolute voice to the narrators, all of whom are fighting for their rightful place." Fusilli concludes: "Tomorrow Is My Turn confirms the arrival of a significant talent whose voice and distinctive approach communicate the simmering emotion at the core of the songs. Thus, she may prove indispensable."

The album is available at your local music shop, on iTunes, Amazon, and in the Nonesuch Store, where orders include a download of the complete album at checkout and CD orders and vinyl pre-orders (due March 3) include an exclusive, autographed print for a limited time. The HD digital album is also available in the Nonesuch Store.

Composer and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s album honey from a winter stone, which he calls a “self-portrait,” is out now. It features improvisational vocalist Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic on synthesizer, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos Quartet. “For arguably the most technically gifted trumpeter of his generation, a lot of Ambrose Akinmusire’s breakthroughs actually come from letting go of standards and structures," says the New York Times. "Lately Akinmusire has been making some of the most intimate, spellbinding music of his career.”
