Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love, the film by director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi documenting the making of Egypt, Youssou's 2004 Grammy-winning Nonesuch release, opens in Canada today. The film had its North American premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival almost a year ago and is now returning to the country for a theatrical run. First up is Montreal's AMC 22 theater.

In the States, I Bring What I Love opens today in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at The Screen, and continues its run in Santa Barbara, California, where the Santa Barbara Independent's Amy R. Ramos says the story the film tells is a complex one, "showing us not only how music can bridge cultural divides, but also presenting us with a more nuanced portrait of Africa, Muslims, and 'the Islamic world' than Western viewers typically get."

Next week, on Friday, July 31, the film opens in six more US cities: San Francisco, Berkeley, and Monterey, California; Atlanta; Montclair, New Jersey; and Roslyn, New York. For next week's opening weekend in the Bay Area, there will be Q&As with director; for those in Atlanta, be sure to check out Q&As with the film's producer, Sarah Price.

Youssou spoke with Fader magazine's Simon Greenberg about the film and about his career in music, at home in Senegal and on the world stage. Says Fader: "I Bring What I Love is an intimate portrait of the international superstar, one of the most compelling and important figures in the huge slice of culture we call world music." The singer also gave a series of video interviews to MTV Iggy now available online at mtviggy.com. You can watch Youssou discuss the film with interviewer Siddharta Mitter there and browse through the site for a number of other video interviews and performances as well.
