Last night, at a special event at New York's Lincoln Center, Youssou N'Dour was named among the 2008–09 mentor artists in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. The mentors, from five countries and six different fields in the arts, also include director Martin Scorsese and actress Kate Valk from the US, German artist Rebecca Horn, Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka, and Czech choreographer Jiri Kylian.

Last night, at a special event at New York's Lincoln Center, Youssou N'Dour was named among the 200809 mentor artists in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, reports Earthtimes.org. The mentors, from five countries and six different fields in the arts, also include director Martin Scorsese and actress Kate Valk from the US, German artist Rebecca Horn, Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka, and Czech choreographer Jiri Kylian.

Launched in 2002, the Arts Initiative matches established and emerging artists from around the world and throughout the arts for a year of intensive, one-on-one collaboration. Each protégés also receives a grant for $25,000, plus travel and other expenses. Over the years, artists from more than 40 countries have participated; past mentors include such renowned artists as David Hockney, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Toni Morrison, Mira Nair, Jessye Norman, Julie Taymor, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Robert Wilson.

    Composer/performer David Longstreth, whose new album with his band Dirty Projectors and the chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, Song of the Earth, is out April 4, stopped by for the Nonesuch Selects video series, in which artists visit the Nonesuch office, pick some of their favorite albums from the music library, and share a few words on their choices. He chose recordings by David Byrne, Jonny Greenwood, Bulgarian State Television Female Choir, Caetano Veloso, Tyondai Braxton, Scritti Politti, and João Gilberto, and from the Nonesuch Explorer Series.
