Congratulations to Jonny Greenwood, whose score to Paul Thomas Anderson's film Phantom Thread won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Best Original Film Score in a ceremony held in London earlier today. The soundtrack includes eighteen compositions by Greenwood and was recorded in London with a sixty-piece string orchestra. IndieWire calls it "a masterpiece," naming it one of the century's best.

"Though the exact day is not known, it was fifteen years ago that Lake Street Dive became a band," says Rachael Price. "McDuck wrote our name on the chalkboard of a practice room and it was done. We didn’t know each other that well. We had zero idea of what kind of music we would play. We certainly didn’t know that fateful day marked the beginning of the longest platonic double date of my life. We have been through so much together ... Happy Fifteenth Bandiversary, y'all!"

Rhiannon Giddens, who begins her four-night residency with the Boston Pops titled Redefining American Music tonight, stopped by Boston's Museum of Fine Arts to perform a few tunes in the museum's Musical Instruments Gallery. She takes a look at the MFA's historical banjo collection and plays one of the banjos and sings, with Carolina Chocolate Drops' Hubby Jenkins on bones and Jason Sypher on bass. Jonny Greenwood is on NPR's All Songs Considered. He talks with NPR's Bob Boilen and Tom Huizenga about his own music—his There Will Be Blood soundtrack and two new pieces just given their premiere in a NPR's Tiny Desk Concert—and shares some works that have inspired him, by New Order, Olivier Messiaen, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Steve Reich. "I love Steve Reich," Greenwood says. "He's a big influence for sure." You can hear the episode here.

Brad Mehldau's Finding Gabriel is out now. The album features performances by Mehldau on piano, synthesizers, percussion, Fender Rhodes, and vocals. Guests include Ambrose Akinmusire, Sara Caswell, Kurt Elling, Joel Frahm, Mark Guiliana, Gabriel Kahane, and Becca Stevens. "A soundtrack for our times," says the AP. "[T]he intricate arrangements of wordless vocals are fascinating, and among the singers is Mehldau, who happens to have a lovely voice. Fetching melodies abound ..." The Times of London gives five stars to the latest album from "the American jazz pianist, one of the best alive ... [T]he dominant mood is of a master musician having fun." To coincide with the album's release, Mehldau has shared a video for the track "The Prophet Is a Fool," which you can watch here.

After a sold-out, year-long critically acclaimed international tour, David Byrne’s American Utopia will play a strictly limited engagement on Broadway at the intimate Hudson Theatre, October 4, 2019, through January 18, 2020, with the official opening set for October 20. Pre-Broadway, it will play eighteen performances at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre, September 11–28, 2019. Tickets are on sale now.

The Black Keys have released the music video for their new song "Go," from their upcoming album "Let's Rock." The video is directed by Bryan Schlam and finds the band struggling to reconnect after five years apart. Pat Carney says, "It was great making this video with Bryan, partially because it was filmed at the very type of place it is making fun of," and Dan Auerbach adds, "The video was fun, but we still haven't spoken." Yola was a guest on NPR's World Cafe. She spoke with host Talia Schlanger about her life and music and performed three songs from her Dan Auerbach-produced debut album, Walk Through Fire from Auerbach's Easy Eye Studio. The songs on the album "ring out with the triumphant air of someone who has withstood the flames and the heat en route to achieving their dreams," says Schlanger. Rhiannon Giddens has shared a series of interview videos made by director Laura Sheeran while Giddens recorded her new album, there is no Other, in Dublin. Giddens, multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, producer Joe Henry, and engineer Ryan Freeland discuss how they all came together to make the album; how Giddens's artistry has evolved since Henry worked with her and the Carolina Chocolate Drops; and how they created a varied palette of sound with the many instruments heard on there is no Other.
