Congratulations to Richard Linklater's film Boyhood, which has been nominated for eight Critics Choice Awards—Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Linklater, Best Acting Ensemble, Best Supporting Actor for Ethan Hawke, Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette, Best Young Actor/Actress for Ellar Coltrane, and Best Editing for Sandra Adair—and to Paul Thomas Anderson's film Inherent Vice, which is up for four: Best Adapted Screenplay for Anderson's adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel, Best Supporting Actor for Josh Brolin, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. The San Francisco Film Critics Circle also included both films in its year-end accolades earlier this week.

Richard Linklater's film Boyhood has landed on a number of lists of Best Movies of 2014, including all three New York Times film critics: A.O. Scott—"In my 15 years of professional movie reviewing, I can’t think of any film that has affected me the way Boyhood did"—and Stephen Holden, who both place the film in the No. 1 spot on their lists, and Manohla Dargis, whose list is alphabetical. The film is also No. 1 on the year's best lists from New York magazine, Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, and Indiewire.

Boyhood has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards: Best Motion Picture, Drama; Best Director and Best Screenplay for Richard Linklater; Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette; and Best Supporting Actor for Ethan Hawke. Joaquin Phoenix is up for Best Actor, Comedy or Musical, for Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice, and Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye's song "Mercy Is," from Darren Aronofsky's Noah, is up for Best Original Song. All three films' soundtracks are on Nonesuch Records.

Boyhood has won the LA Film Critics Award for Best Picture, Best Director for Richard Linklater, Best Actress for Patricia Arquette, and Best Editing for Sandra Adair; Jonny Greenwood's score for Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice was named Best Music Score. Boston Society of Film Critics also named Boyhood Best Picture, Best Director for Linklater, Best Editor for Adair, and Best Ensemble Cast, and awarded Inherent Vice for Best Use of Music in a Film. The New York Film Critics Online named Boyhood Best Picture, Best Director for Linklater, and Best Supporting Actress for Arquette.

Also this week, the film, which was written, directed, and co-produced by Linklater, received the Gotham Independent Film Audience Award and was named among the Top Films of the Year by the National Board of Review.

Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice, which was not eligible for individual nominations this year, was selected to receive the Robert Altman Award, which is bestowed upon one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast. Winners of the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards will be announced on February 21 in a ceremony broadcast live on IFC. Nonesuch will have release the soundtracks to both films.
