Saxophonist Joshua Redman’s Trios Live is out now. The album was recorded at New York City’s Jazz Standard and Washington, DC’s Blues Alley during stands with two different trios—Redman and drummer Gregory Hutchinson with bassist Matt Penman (Jazz Standard) and Redman and Hutchinson with bassist Reuben Rogers (Blues Alley). Trios Live features four original tunes by Redman and interpretations of three additional songs. "It’s a great set," raves the Financial Times, "full of muscular rhythms and the abandon of live performance, yet as tightly argued as a rigorous studio date."

Joshua Redman has joined forces with the International Rescue Committee to become an IRC Voice to help raise awareness of the needs of refugees and others who have been impacted by war and disaster. “I've been greatly impressed with the depth of the International Rescue Committee’s devotion to human beings and the breadth of its work in defense of human dignity,” Redman said. As an IRC Voice, he plans to travel with the IRC to Africa later this year.

Joshua Redman and his Quartet kick off a cross-country tour of the United States with a performance at The Egg in Albany, New York, tonight, followed by stops in Boston, Philadelphia, Santa Cruz, Berkeley, Urbana, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. "As accolades from jazz critic and the public continue to rain down on Redman, he doesn't stand still," says the Times Union, previewing tonight's tour opener. "What fans will see is one of the world's great musical minds at work, in a setting that is sure to have moments that surprise even Redman."

Joshua Redman, whose latest album, Walking Shadows, was released this week, kicks off a tour of Europe with his Quartet, featuring Aaron Goldberg on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums in Le Mans, France, tonight, followed by additional stops in France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Germany. He returns to the States for a June 4 show at NYC's Town Hall with the quartet featured on Walking Shadows—Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, Brian Blade—and an orchestra.

Walking Shadows, Joshua Redman’s first recording to include an orchestral ensemble, is out now. Its core ensemble is a quartet featuring Brad Mehldau, who produced the album, Larry Grenadier, and Brian Blade. Walking Shadows includes original tunes from both Redman and Mehldau along with works by a wide range of composers, like John Mayer and Pino Palladino, Kern and Hammerstein, and Lennon and McCartney. The album is "never less than exceptionally beautiful," exclaims Buffalo News, an "unmitigated triumph ... one of the jazz discs of the year." MusicOMH concurs, suggesting this "gorgeous" album "will prove to be one of the year’s most satisfying jazz listens."

The 2013 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, aka Jazz Fest, gets under way today as the first of two consecutive weekends of music unfolds. Included among this weekend's performers are Joshua Redman with his Quartet and New Orleans native sons Dr. John and Allen Toussaint. The Black Keys help close out the festival next weekend. Also in New Orleans this weekend is Fatoumata Diawara, who performs at the House of Blues. 

Joshua Redman’s new album, Walking Shadows, due out May 7, is featured on the latest episode of BBC Radio 2's Jamie Cullum. Cullum plays the album track "Stop This Train," written by John Mayer and Pino Palladino, and noting the album's core ensemble of Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, and Brian Blade, says: "It’s fascinating here how this band get into this very sweet melody and state it in a very simple, beautiful way, and then start improvising on the melody and go more and more inside and outside the song in the soloing. A brilliant bit of improvisation from Joshua Redman.”

Cal Performances at the University of California, Berkeley, has announced its 2013–14 concert season, which will feature performances from a number of Nonesuch artists: Kronos Quartet, which celebrates its 40th anniversary with two concerts at Zellerbach Hall; Joshua Redman, whose Quartet performs songs from his new album, Walking Shadows; and Richard Goode, performing music by Janáček, Schubert, and Debussy. Additionally, Cal Performances and the Ojai Music Festival present Ojai North!, of which pianist Jeremy Denk is this season's music director.
