Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet's first collaboration, Landfall, due February 16, is streaming in full till then as an NPR First Listen. In the piece, inspired by Anderson's experience of Hurricane Sandy, "she doesn't revisit the storm so much as ruminate—sometimes with dry wit—on the idea of how we handle loss," says NPR's Tom Huizenga. "With a dream-like blend of electronics, acoustic instruments, high-tech software and voice overs, she searches for meaning in the mystery of it all."

Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet have shared a fourth track from their forthcoming album, Landfall: "CNN Predicts a Monster Storm." The video for the song premiered via The Quietus, which spoke with Anderson and Kronos's David Harrington about this "first recording collaboration between two of contemporary music’s most renowned figures." IndieWire has published its list of The 25 Best Movie Scores of the 21st Century, including five for which Nonesuch released the soundtrack: Philip Glass's score to Stephen Daldry's 2002 film The Hours; Clint Mansell's for Darren Aronofsky's 2006 film The Fountain, performed by Kronos Quartet and Mogwai; and three scores to Paul Thomas Anderson films—Jon Brion's for 2002's Punch-Drunk Love, and Jonny Greenwood's for 2007's There Will Be Blood and the just-released Phantom Thread. IndieWire says "the last 18 years have given us some of the most memorable music ever written for the movies."

Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet’s Landfall is due February 16, 2018. Kronos Quartet, which released an album of Folk Songs with four Nonesuch label mates in June, has announced its concert season for the autumn of 2017. On the schedule ahead are travels to Singapore, South Korea, and throughout the US and Canada, as well as multiple shows in and around the quartet's hometown of San Francisco.

Folk Songs, a new album joining Kronos Quartet with Nonesuch Records labelmates Sam Amidon, Olivia Chaney, Rhiannon Giddens, and Natalie Merchant is out now. The artists on the album first came together to perform these songs, most of which are traditional with contemporary arrangements, when Nonesuch celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014 with festivals at the Barbican Centre and Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Kronos Quartet and Rhiannon Giddens have shared their recording of her "Lullaby," arranged by Punch Brothers' Gabe Witcher, from the new album Folk Songs, due June 9. You can hear it here. On the album, Kronos joins forces with labelmates Giddens, Sam Amidon, Olivia Chaney, and Natalie Merchant to perform mostly traditional tunes with contemporary arrangements. Kronos Quartet's acclaimed 1992 album Pieces of Africa is now available on vinyl for the first time, from Nonesuch Records. The vinyl edition features the album on two 140-gram LPs. This "potent new brew of folk influences, Minimalism, and European forms by eight black, brown, and white African composers," as Time described it, became a cross-cultural and commercial landmark: the first album to top both the classical and world music Billboard charts.

Kronos Quartet released its Nonesuch Records debut album 30 years ago today, August 15, 1986. The self-titled album includes works by Peter Sculthorpe, Aulis Sallinen, Philip Glass, Conlon Nancarrow, and Jimi Hendrix. The Washington Post praised the group's "breadth of vision" throughout a collection "devoted to some of the most imaginative music of our time." The New York Times called it "the best recorded anthology yet to capture the heady diversity of musical idioms that this San Francisco quartet espouses."

Among the 80th birthday celebrations for Steve Reich will be a week of concerts by the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) and Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) highlighting the composer's works at Davies Symphony Hall, September 7–11, 2016, starting with the Orchestra's Opening Night Gala and culminating in an all-Reich concert featuring Kronos Quartet. The pieces to be performed during the week are Three Movements, Double Sextet, Six Marimbas, Electric Counterpoint, and WTC 9/11.
