    Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell's new album, The Traveling Kind, released earlier this year to critical acclaim, is now available on vinyl. The LP edition is pressed on 140-gram, audiophile vinyl and includes a download of the complete album. "Here, they consciously embrace the full breadth of their expression," says NPR. "This is what it sounds like when true equals, both deep into their journeys, draw out the best in each other." Rolling Stone says: "Their creative partnership sounds stronger than ever."

    In honor of groundbreaking American composer Terry Riley’s 80th birthday, Nonesuch Records releases One Earth, One People, One Love: Kronos Plays Terry Riley—a five-disc box set of four albums of his work composed for, and performed by, his longtime friends and champions Kronos Quartet—as well as the individual record Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector: Music of Terry Riley, today (July 10 outside of North America). You can take a quick look inside the box in a new video here. "All of the pieces," says the Independent, "are, typically, timeless." Kronos continues the celebration with its Terry Riley Festival this weekend at the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco.

    The Arcs' debut album, Yours, Dreamily, will be released Friday, September 4, on Nonesuch Records and is available for pre-order now with an instant download of the album track "Stay in My Corner." The Arcs are Dan Auerbach, Leon Michels, Richard Swift, Homer Steinweiss, and Nick Movshon. Also on the album are Kenny Vaughan and Mariachi Flor de Toloache. In anticipation of the release, "Stay in My Corner" premiered today via NPR Music. The Arcs will be touring in support of the album; details will be announced soon.

    The Bad Plus Joshua Redman, the debut album from the eponymous quartet, is out now in North America (June 8 for the rest of the world). "The album is a knockout," exclaims the New York Times. "It is impressive how much vital presence [Redman] brings to the Bad Plus without altering the band’s dynamic." It's "a roaring and beautiful summit meeting," says NPR. "The ideas are impressive by themselves, but become more powerful as Redman and the rhythm section go about developing them ... [T]he real triumph of The Bad Plus Joshua Redman: It exhibits genuinely fresh thinking." The Bad Plus Joshua Redman begins a world tour in NYC June 10.

    Newly formed Congolese seven-piece band Mbongwana Star releases its debut full-length album, From Kinshasa, today via World Circuit, distributed in North America by Nonesuch Records; vinyl follows July 31. It's a "wonderful kind of collaboration," says NPR. "The sound is out of this world." Chicago Reader says the "album is a blast ... stunning." The Guardian gives From Kinshasa a perfect five stars, naming it Album of the Week. Says Noisey: "It's time to press play and immerse yourself in another world."

    The Bad Plus Joshua Redman's self-titled, debut album is due out next week and is streaming in full till then as an NPR First Listen at npr.org. The album is "a roaring and beautiful summit meeting," says NPR's Tom Moon. "The ideas are impressive by themselves, but become more powerful as Redman and the rhythm section go about developing them ... [T]he real triumph of The Bad Plus Joshua Redman: It exhibits genuinely fresh thinking." The album, he concludes, "draws on a range of old ideas (as old as Chopin nocturnes and '60s rock) as fuel for a journey into the murky, terrifying, thrilling unknown."

    Today marks the release of HIVE1, the label debut from Tyondai Braxton. Written and recorded throughout 2013 and 2014, the recording comprises eight pieces that were originally conceived for a performance work called HIVE that debuted at New York’s Guggenheim Museum in 2013. Q magazine calls the new album "a sonically absorbing experience." NPR says: "[W]hat sets this album apart is its playfulness—the feeling that experimenting with sound is a joyful game." Braxton gives the Canadian premiere of HIVE at the Mutek festival in Montreal later this month and performs the piece for three nights at The Kitchen in NYC in early June

The group stiches "together bombastic African rhythms with lithe guitars and sinuous basslines to make your body bang," says Noisey. "Mbonwana Star's debut album, From Kinshasa, features a breadth of textures and moods," the site continues. "Its strength lies in its dynamic eclecticism, a gleeful mish-mash of genres ... Riley and Kronos met more than 35 years ago, and since then, the quartet has commissioned 27 works from him, more than from any other composer in the group’s history. Pre-orders include an instant download of the piece G Song, which you can hear here.
