"Here you have the guy who is speaking to the universality of the human experience in every molecule," Ken Burns tells Walter Isaacson on PBS's Amanpour & Co. about the subject of his latest film, Leonardo da Vinci. Sarah Burns, his co-director on the film with David McMahon, adds: "I think it's entirely central to who Leonardo was, that he had these interests across such a wide spectrum, and he didn't see those things as being separate. To him, all of these things were related and part of his larger effort to just understand the universe and everything he could about the human experience, the human body, and how all of these things are connected." The original score for Ken Burns’s new two-part documentary, LEONARDO da VINCI, with new compositions by Caroline Shaw, is out now; the documentary airs on November 18 and 19 at 8pm ET on PBS. The album features performances by the composer’s longtime collaborators Attacca Quartet, Sō Percussion, and Roomful of Teeth as well as John Patitucci. Shaw wrote and recorded new music for LEONARDO da VINCI, marking the first time a Ken Burns film has featured an entirely original score. Hurray for the Riff Raff (aka Alynda Segarra) has released an official music video for their song “Buffalo.” One of many highlights from The Past Is Still Alive—one of The Best Albums of the 2020s So Far, per Pitchfork—“Buffalo” is a love song about survival, patience, miracles, and memories of real people and places that Segarra experienced during trips to New Mexico. In the video, directed by Jeff Perlman, Segarra takes over the Field Museum in their brand new home of Chicago, roams alongside a herd of wild buffalo, and shines a light on extinct and endangered species. "For some five decades, artist and musician Laurie Anderson has been redefining cultural boundaries," says PBS NewsHour host Amna Nawaz. "In a new album, she's now exploring the story of an earlier woman who reached for the heights." "The stories you tell yourself about who you are and what you want, those are stories to help you live," she says. "If you don't have those suddenly, it's terrifying. Carminho performs from the picturesque Palácio da Pena in Sintra, Portugal, as part of Good Morning America host Robin Roberts' reporting from there. Roberts talks with the "Portuguese icon" about fado and Carminho's bringing it to the big screen via her role in Yorgos Lanthimos's 2023 Oscar-winning film, Poor Things. "Her highly renowned performance captivated Emma Stone's character and the audience in a magical scene," says Roberts. Juneteenth special to talk with host Amy Goodman about her album You're the One and the track "Another Wasted Life," which she wrote inspired by the tragic story of Kalief Browder, a young man wrongfully incarcerated at NYC's Rikers Island for three years, where he was subjected to nearly two years of solitary confinement. Congratulations to the company of Illinoise: A New Musical on its performance on the Tony Awards last night and to the show's director, choreographer, and co-author Justin Peck, who won the Tony for Outstanding Choreography. The cast performed "The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out to Get Us!," from the show, which features music and lyrics by Sufjan Stevens based on his album Illinois, with new arrangements by Timo Andres. The cast of the current four-time Tony Award-nominated Broadway show Illinoise: A New Musical was on CBS's The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform "Jacksonville" from the show and the just-released original cast recording. The choreography and tap dance choreography are by the show's director, choreographer, and co-author Justin Peck, with tap dance improvisations by Byron Tittle; music and lyrics are by Sufjan Stevens based on his album Illinois.
