Mountain Man stopped by WNYC Studios as the guest on New Sounds' Soundcheck. The trio spoke with host John Schaefer about Magic Ship and performed three songs from the new album: "AGT," "Underwear," and "Boat." "Their music features a timeless sound," says Schaefer. Paul Thomas Anderson's Academy Award–winning film Phantom Thread, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Manville, and Vicky Krieps, will receive its HBO premiere on Saturday, September 29, and will be available to watch via the HBO GO and HBO NOW apps. The Guardian says there is "such pure delicious pleasure in this film"; Financial Times says Anderson "gets everything right here." The soundtrack, featuring Jonny Greenwood's Oscar-nominated score, is out on Nonesuch.

Singer Mandy Patinkin and pianist/producer Thomas Bartlett's Diary: April/May 2018, the second in their Diary series of musical installments, is out now on Nonesuch. The fourteen tracks of this Diary entry, recorded in Bartlett's NYC studio, include two songs written by Patinkin himself plus songs by Randy Newman, Laurie Anderson, Bob Dylan, Patty Griffin, Harry Nilsson, Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett, Taylor Mac, Keren Ann, and Stephen Sondheim. Fleet Foxes have released a short film for their Crack-Up album opener, "I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar," directed by Sean Pecknold, with art direction and production design by Adi Goodrich and choreography by Steve Reker. The film was shot on 35mm film in southern California, creating a look that feels like an old Technicolor movie, with everything hand-made and in-camera. WeTransfer commissioned and helped produce the video. Chris Thile joined Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards to perform "Sidewalks of New York," a 19th-century vaudeville song, for Spire Studios. Watch the result here. Thile and his fellow Punch Brothers begin the last leg of their big US summer tour in Washington, DC, on Thursday; their new album, All Ashore, is out on vinyl this Friday. Tune-Yards open for David Byrne on the next leg of his American Utopia tour, starting this Friday.

Punch Brothers returned to Conan on TBS as musical guests, performing "It's All Part of the Plan" from their new album, All Ashore. Watch it here. The band's big summer tour resumes in Washington, DC, on September 6, and culminates at Red Rocks Amphitheater on September 17. The European tour is in November.

Mountain Man, whose new album, Magic Ship, is due September 21, has shared the official video for the album track "Rang Tang Ring Toon." The video was directed by D.L. Mandy Patinkin, or rather an animated version of the singer and actor, is featured on the latest episode of The Birds and The BS, "the kids show for adults," hosted by Jordan Roth. Gabriel Kahane has released a new song from his forthcoming Nonesuch debut album, Book of Travelers, called "Little Love," and a new video here. The song is available to download now with pre-orders of Book of Travelers along with three other recently released album tracks. Lake Street Dive stopped by Songkick Live to perform several songs from their new album, Free Yourself Up, and earlier fan favorites, and to answer fans' questions. "We had such a great time on this one," says the band. "And they fed the audience our favorite chips and dip!" You can watch the complete session here.

Olivia Chaney closes out her US summer tour in Los Angeles tonight. She performs songs from her new album, Shelter, as she did at Hoxton Hall in London back in June when the album was released. You can now watch her perform "Roman Holiday" and "House on a Hill" from that show, joined by Jordan Hunt and Chris Vatalaro, in the video here, directed by Bobby Williams.

David Byrne's 1986 film True Stories will receive its Blu-Ray and DVD via the Criterion Collection on November 20, 2018. The complete film soundtrack will also be released for the first time on Nonesuch this fall; details to come. Byrne was inspired by tabloid headlines to make True Stories, his sole foray into feature film directing, an ode to the extraordinariness of ordinary American life and a distillation of what was in his own idiosyncratic mind. He uses his songs to stitch together pop iconography, voodoo rituals, and a singular variety show-all in the service of uncovering the rich mysteries that lurk under the surface of everyday experience.
