I Still Play, an album of eleven new solo piano compositions written by artists who have recorded for Nonesuch Records, is now available. The pieces were written in honor of the label's longtime President Bob Hurwitz on the occasion of his 2017 shift into the Chairman Emeritus role. This "all-star collection" (Financial Times) features works by John Adams, Laurie Anderson, Timo Andres, Louis Andriessen, Donnacha Dennehy, Philip Glass, Nico Muhly, Brad Mehldau, Steve Reich, Pat Metheny, and Randy Newman, performed by Andres, Mehldau, Newman, and Jeremy Denk. A new video of Andres performing his own piece, "Wise Words," on which you can follow along in the score, is also available here.

While we can't go out to take in great live music, here are some events taking place online to enjoy while staying home this weekend—a long Memorial Day weekend in the US: Joshua Redman and Tigran Hamasyan perform in the free online Tokyo Jazz Festival Saturday and Sunday; Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi lead a live home concert to benefit Gather New Haven Friday; Lake Street Dive's 2018 concert at The Anthem in DC premieres on Nugs Friday; Lianne La Havas is on BBC Two's Later... With Jools Holland from home Friday night.

Chris Thile and Rachael & Vilray are set to take part in the newly announced flexible summer programming presented at Caramoor, the cultural arts venue on an 80-plus-acre estate in Katonah, New York. They will perform the season's first public, open-air concerts on Caramoor's Friends Fields, set up for small, well-spaced audiences, on Saturdays July 18 and July 25, respectively. Tickets will go on sale five days before each performance.

Lianne La Havas has released "Can't Fight," a new song from her upcoming self-titled album. You can hear it here. "'Can’t Fight' is that feeling of, you know it’s not good, but you can’t not do it," La Havas says of the song, which was co-written and produced by Mura Masa. "People say if you’re having a hard time in a relationship, just leave. It’s so easy to say, but it’s so much more complicated than that. Because there’s two of you, and neither of you are perfect. And there are things that you’re learning along the way. So you think, ‘Well, let me do a little bit of work and just see if we can get that feeling back—it’s possible because we do really love each other.’ So I guess at the time, I was convinced that yes, it’s hard, but we can get through this."

Composer/pianist Timo Andres was due to make his Carnegie Hall recital debut on April 29. The program was meant to feature several pieces from the new album I Still Play, out this Friday, and more. When the concert was canceled due to COVID-19, Andres filmed himself performing each piece on the program from home, and released the concert on YouTube the night it was meant to have taken place. You can now watch it here. "The music has taken on new depth during [this] process," Andres writes. "I love it all even more now. Each of the I Still Play pieces is a little conversational gem, distilling an aspect of its author’s voice into a concentrated nugget."

Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi performed songs from their album there is no Other at the very special venue of The Metropolitan Museum's Temple of Dendur in NYC last fall. The concert received its digital premiere via The Met last weekend and can now be seen here. "This performance is both a condemnation of 'othering' and a celebration of the spreading of ideas, connectivity, and shared experience," says The Met. The unique venue "provided a stunning context for Giddens' virtuosity and raw emotional musicality."

Lianne La Havas released the video for her single "Paper Thin," from her upcoming self-titled album, due July 17. She made the video herself while social-distancing at home in London. You can watch it here. "'Paper Thin,’ for me, is the song that started this whole thing going. It started as a distant melody in my head as I was falling asleep that I decided not to sleep on,” La Havas explains. “It was recorded as jam between friends and has stayed that way.”

The Magnetic Fields’ Quickies—twenty-eight new short songs by Stephin Merritt—is now available digitally on Nonesuch Records, with a five 7" vinyl box set due May 29 and a single CD on June 19. "Pop's pithiest songwriter strikes again," says Uncut, with "twenty-eight delightfully barbed Merritt miniatures." A video for the track "I've Got a Date with Jesus," featuring footage shot by the band, was also released today and can be seen here. The Magnetic Fields are due to perform at City Winery venues across the US in early 2021.

Brad Mehldau was on The WTF Bach Podcast to talk with host Evan Shinners about a range of topics, not least Bach. Mehldau is "one of the foremost pianists alive," says host Evan Shinners. "He is without doubt, one of the most influential, one of the most imitated, and certainly one of the most unique musicians around. And I could spend as much time speaking about his accomplishments, his merits as I did talking to him, but I won't because our conversation is much more interesting."
