Brad Mehldau—having just completed tours of the United States and Europe with the Brad Mehldau Trio in support of the new album Blues and Ballads, out this Friday—embarks on a trio tour of a different sort today. The pianist reunites with drummer Mark Guiliana, with whom he paired up for Grammy-nominated album Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, and guitarist John Scofield for a tour that begins with a six-night, multi-set residency at the Blue Note in New York City starting tonight as part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival. Following this week's run and a solo show from Mehldau in France, the tour takes the trio to the UK and Europe in July, including sets at the Love Supreme, Montreux, Vienna, Gent, and North Sea jazz festivals, as well as stops in France, Italy, Spain, Israel, Turkey, and Germany. The trio reunites in the US in early September for the Detroit Free Jazz Festival.
"The omnivorously eclectic trouble these three get into will be worth the price of admission," exclaims the New Yorker.

Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, the debut album from the duo of Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana was released by Nonesuch in 2014 and won the Edison Award for Best International Jazz Album. Jazzwise called the album "astonishing" and "one of the best albums of 2014."
Brad Mehldau Trio's Blues and Ballads, which is available to pre-order on iTunes and in the Nonesuch Store now, comprises interpretations of songs by other composers, this time with the focus on blues and ballads implied by the album’s title, including works by Cole Porter, Charlie Parker, Lennon & McCartney, and Jon Brion. Mojo exclaims: "A spellbinding set whose salient features are subtlety and understatement ... Sublime stuff."
