Celebrate Brooklyn!—one of New York City's longest running, free, outdoor performing arts festivals—has announced the complete line-up for this summer's concert series in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Among the featured performers this year are several artists familiar to readers of the Nonesuch Journal: Lake Street Dive, Conor Oberst, Fleet Foxes, Sam Amidon, Amadou & Mariam, and Youssou N'Dour.

Celebrate Brooklyn!—one of New York City's longest running, free, outdoor performing arts festivals—has announced the complete line-up for this summer's concert series in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Among the featured performers this year are several Nonesuch artists: Lake Street Dive, Conor Oberst, Fleet Foxes, and Sam Amidon.

Lake Street Dive kicks off the entire 2017 Celebrate Brooklyn! season with a free Opening Night performance on Wednesday, June 7. The band kicks off their own US spring and summer tour, featuring music from their 2016 Nonesuch debut album, Side Pony, with a performance at New Orleans Jazz Fest this coming weekend.

Conor Oberst leads a benefit concert for Celebrate Brooklyn! on Thursday, July 20. He'll be joined by special guests Hop Along from Brooklyn and Hop Along from Philadelphia. Oberst begins his US tour, featuring music from his new album, Salutations, with Felice Brothers as backing band, in California next week.

Fleet Foxes give two nights of benefit concerts for Celebrate Brooklyn! on Tuesday, August 1, and Wednesday, August 2, performing songs from its Nonesuch debut album, Crack-Up, due June 16. The band begins its world tour in the Pacific Northwest later this month, including a hometown show at The Showbox in Seattle.

Sam Amidon plays his Celebrate Brooklyn! set ahead of Wilco guitarist Nels Cline on Saturday, August 5. Amidon's new album, The Following Mountain, is due out on Nonesuch on May 26.

Also among the performers taking to the Prospect Park Bandshell this summer are two artists familiar to longtime readers of the Nonesuch Journal: Malian duo Amadou & Mariam will perform on Friday, July 21, preceded by New York City collective Innov Gnawa and a DJ set from Ahmed Gallab; and Senegalese superstar Youssou N'Dour headlines on Saturday, August 12, preceded by Malian kora player Yacouba Sissoko.

    David Longstreth’s Song of the Earth, a song cycle for orchestra and voices, is due April 4. Performed by Longstreth with his band Dirty Projectors—Felicia Douglass, Maia Friedman, Olga Bell—and the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, the album also features Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), Steve Lacy, Patrick Shiroishi, Anastasia Coope, Tim Bernardes, Ayoni, Portraits of Tracy, and the author David Wallace-Wells. Longstreth says that while Song of the Earth—his biggest-yet foray into the field of concert music—"is not a ‘climate change opera,’” he wanted to “find something beyond sadness: beauty spiked with damage.     Composer Steve Reich talks about creating his 1970–71 piece Drumming—which the Village Voice hailed as “the most important work of the whole minimalist music movement"—in a new video from his publisher Boosey & Hawkes. Steve Reich and Musicians gave the world premiere performance of Drumming at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC in December 1971. Their 1987 Nonesuch recording is included in the forthcoming Steve Reich Collected Works, a twenty-seven disc box set, due March 14.
