Chris Thile and Michael Daves, while in Newport for what NPR called a "sizzling set" at the Newport Folk Festival last month, took some time out to perform two songs for Paste—"Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms," off their album Sleep with One Eye Open, and another traditional tune, "Darlin' Corey"—now available to watch in the latest issue of Paste's online mPlayer. Thile and Daves are on the road again next month, touring the Midwest, UK, and Ireland, following Thile's current tour with Punch Brothers.
Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile and guitar maven Michael Daves, while in Newport for what NPR's Ann Powers called a "sizzling set" at the Newport Folk Festival last month, took some time out at the town’s Fort Adams State Park to perform two songs for Paste magazine: "Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms," off their recently released Nonesuch debut album, Sleep with One Eye Open, and another traditional tune, "Darlin' Corey."
"As the 2011 Newport Folk Festival started to wind down on its final day," writes Paste's Max Blau, "virtuosic bluegrass duo Chris Thile and Michael Daves huddled around a single microphone to sing a pair of songs inside Fort Adams."
Video of both performances is now available in the latest issue of Paste's multimedia online mPlayer at mplayer.pastemagazine.com.
The duo had performed another live set in the Paste offices earlier this year upon the release of Sleep with One Eye Open, featuring a number of songs off the new record. You can watch that set again at pastemagazine.com.
Chris Thile and Michael Daves return to the road together next month with a few dates in the Midwest followed by a full tour of the UK and Ireland. Until then, Thile joins his fellow Punch Brothers on a tour that features several festival dates in the coming days, including the Ottawa Folk Festival tonight, where they’re a critics’ pick in the Ottawa Citizen.
