Mandolinist and composer Chris Thile kicks off a solo tour of the United States at Murray State University, the university he attended, in Murray, Kentucky, tonight, followed by stops in Kalamazoo, Birmingham, Iowa City, San Diego, San Francisco, Portland, Charleston, and many other cities across the country, through the month of November. Thile joins label mate Brad Mehldau for a newly announced duo show at Bowery Ballroom in New York City on December 28. See below for all of the currently scheduled shows; for all the latest, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
Chris Thile released a solo album of Bach Sonatas and Partitas on Nonesuch Records in 2013. His second duo album with bassist Edgar Meyer, Bass & Mandolin, won a Grammy Award earlier this year. Thile released a duo album of a different sort, Sleep With One Eye Open, with guitarist Michael Daves in 2011. “The most impressive musicians are often versatile, but few match the breadth of the brilliant mandolinist Chris Thile,” says the New York Times. “His versatility is apparent in the remarkable range of colors and shadings he produces on his instrument; phrases unfold with myriad subtle gradations.”
In December, Thile joins his fellow Punch Brothers to resume their own US tour, with shows in Madison, Saint Louis, Ithaca, Wilmington, Woodstock, and more, with support from Gabriel Kahane and Anaïs Mitchell. Punch Brothers released The Phosphorescent Blues on Nonesuch earlier this year and will release The Wireless, a new five-song EP from the same T Bone Burnett–produced recording sessions, in November.
