Today is release day for Christina Courtin's self-titled Nonesuch debut. To mark the occasion, Christina will appear on WNYC's Soundcheck to talk about the new record and perform a few songs from it. The Washington Post's Express Night Out says: "Courtin's voice is effortless adaptable, weaving in and out of the instrumentation, constantly playing with texture and volume, never particularly anxious about how it sounds, but never perfectly content, either ... It may only be her debut album, but considering her confirmed songwriting and singing abilities, Courtin already sounds like a veteran."

Today is release day for Christina Courtin's self-titled Nonesuch debut. To mark the occasion, Christina will appear on Soundcheck, the daily music talk show from WNYC, 93.9 FM, New York Public Radio, to talk with the show's host, John Schaefer, about the new record and perform a few songs from it. Tune in live at 2:30 PM ET on the radio or online at wnyc.org.

The Washington Post's Express Night Out calls the new album "deceptively simple," saying, "It's the best singers who make it all look too easy." Express contributor Afton Woodward explains: "What makes her songs so lovely is that her seriousness unexpectedly translates into music that, while drawing mostly from folk influences, also exhibits something like the spontaneity of jazz."

The writer says it's the apparent ease with which Christina expresses herself on the new record that her talent shines through. "Courtin's voice is effortless adaptable," writes Woodward, "weaving in and out of the instrumentation, constantly playing with texture and volume, never particularly anxious about how it sounds, but never perfectly content, either."

---

The release week celebration continues tomorrow night with a live concert performance from Christina at New York's Le Poisson Rouge. For more tour information, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

As the article concludes, "It may only be her debut album, but considering her confirmed songwriting and singing abilities, Courtin already sounds like a veteran."

The Way Out of Easy, the first album from guitarist Jeff Parker and his long-running ETA IVtet—saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Jay Bellerose—since their 2022 debut Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy, which Pitchfork named one of the Best Albums of the 2020s So Far, is out now on International Anthem / Nonesuch Records. Like that album, The Way Out of Easy comprises recordings from LA venue ETA, where Parker and the ensemble held a weekly residency for seven years. During that time, the ETA IVtet evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form journeys into innovative, groove-oriented improvised music. All four tracks on The Way Out of Easy come from a single night in 2023, providing an unfiltered view of the ensemble, fully in their element.

Composer and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s honey from a winter stone is out January 17, 2025, on Nonesuch Records. The album, which Ambrose calls a “self-portrait,” features improvisational vocalist Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic on synthesizer, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos Quartet. Akinmusire says, “In many respects this entire work is inspired by and is an homage to the work of the composer Julius Eastman and his organic music concept." The opening track, “muffled screams,” is out now.
