Nickel Creek's new album, A Dotted Line, is due out next Tuesday, April 1. But you don’t need to wait till then to hear it: the new album is streaming in full all this week as an NPR First Listen. "There's no doubt that the virtuosity and vision of each Nickel Creek member has intensified," writes NPR's Ann Powers. The new album is "more adventurous than Nickel Creek's earlier work, and more expressive of each player's strengths ... It's tight, it's masterful; it's totally grown-up. But it's also a blast."

Nickel Creek's new album, A Dotted Line, is due out next Tuesday, April 1, on Nonesuch Records. But you don’t need to wait till then to hear it. The new album from the Grammy Award–winning, multi-platinum selling trio of Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, and Sean Watkins, reuniting for the first time since its 2007 self-described "indefinite hiatus," is streaming in full all this week as an NPR First Listen at npr.org/music.

"There's no doubt that the virtuosity and vision of each Nickel Creek member has intensified," writes NPR's Ann Powers. The new album is "more adventurous than Nickel Creek's earlier work, and more expressive of each player's strengths."

Powers explains: "Each member displays how she or he has come to understand the marriage of emotion and chops, pop appeal and deep musical knowledge, that Nickel Creek represents. And each listens profoundly to the other throughout the process, striving for real equality—a rare achievement among three such dominant players ..."

She goes on to say that "Intuitive cooperation is what makes Nickel Creek so special .... It's remarkable, showing how three distinct voices can come together in the service of expressing how one person can feel many things at once."

Powers concludes: "It's tight, it's masterful; it's totally grown-up. But it's also a blast."

Read more and hear the complete album at npr.org/music.

To pre-order A Dotted Line, head to iTunes and the Nonesuch Store, where vinyl (due April 21) and CD orders include an instant download of three tracks off the album: "Destination," "Love of Mine," and "21st of May."

The band is heading out on tour in April, starting with a live broadcast performance of A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor at New York's Town Hall. For details on all the shows, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

"Music is a powerful tool. In an instant, it can change your mood, your perspective, or your life," Stacey Abrams says on her Crooked Media podcast, Assembly Required, introducing her conversation with Rhiannon Giddens. "No matter the motivation, music is an outlet, a force that builds us up or keeps us steady. It holds the capacity to move millions and to resonate with each individual, and every lyric, every note, every beat has the potential to share a message." You can hear their conversation here. Giddens's new album with Silkroad Ensemble, American Railroad, is out next week; their fall tour begins tonight.

"Hurray for the Riff Raff is the perfect music for this moment," Anna Sale says of the guest on her Slate podcast, Death, Sex & Money. "In it, you hear the sweep of American history and propulsive motion, coming together in joy and protest and marking losses in family and community, and Alynda Segarra's voice—clear and melodic with a sly punk edge." You can hear their conversation, about Segarra's life and music, here.
