The soundtrack for I Am Love, the new film from director Luca Guadagnino and actress Tilda Swinton, featuring music by John Adams, is out today on Nonesuch, one day before the film's red-carpet premiere gala in New York City. Several of Adams's works comprise the score to the film, which the New York Times called "a cinematic tour de force." Even so, the Observer notes: "Whether or not you see the film, this soundtrack is a rewarding digest of the Pulitzer-winner's musical styles."

The film's soundtrack features more than an hour of music from a number of works by John Adams: Chairman Dances; movement one from Century Rolls; Lollapalooza; the third and fourth movements from Shaker Loops; the "Desert Chorus" from the opera The Death of Klinghoffer; an excerpt from Fearful Symmetries; and parts two and three from Harmonielehre.

Of course, there is very good reason to see the film as well when it begins its US theatrical run this Friday. Following its UK release, the Times of London gave the film a perfect five stars, exclaiming: "Elegantly paced, exquisitely photographed and blessed with a sublime score by John Adams, the film references both Visconti and Hitchcock, but is a masterpiece in its own right."

The Wall Street Journal features a profile of Guadagnino, the film's director, in which Switon explains how Adams' music came to be included in the film. She and Guadagnino "shot and edited their film to a soundtrack of John Adams's work, before securing any rights to the composer's music," reports the Journal's Michelle Kung. "Luckily, the high-stakes gamble paid off and Mr. Adams gave his approval." Read more at online.wsj.com. The New York Times looks at the working relationship between the actress, who also produced the film, and the director, also noting the "lush score" by Adams. You can read that article at nytimes.com.

To pick up a copy of the I Am Love soundtrack on CD, with the complete album MP3s included at no additional cost upon checkout, head to the Nonesuch Store. To find the film at a theater near you, head to magpictures.com.

The twenty-seven disc box set Steve Reich Collected Works is due March 14, 2025, on Nonesuch. It features music recorded during the composer's forty years on the label—six decades of his compositions, including first recordings of his two latest works, Jacob’s Ladder and Traveler’s Prayer—plus two extensive booklets with new essays by Robert Hurwitz, Michael Tilson Thomas, Russell Hartenberger, Judith Sherman, and Nico Muhly, and a comprehensive listener’s guide by Timo Andres. Nonesuch made its first record with Steve Reich in 1985; he was signed exclusively to the label that year. Collected Works includes twenty-four discs of Nonesuch recordings and three from other labels.
