Composer John Adams will conduct the London Symphony Orchestra in several performances in London and France over the coming week. The concerts begin with a performance of his 2000 Nativity Oratorio, El Niño, at Barbican Hall in London this Sunday, December 4, followed by a night featuring his 2014 dramatic symphony Scheherazade.2 with violinist Leila Josefowicz, for whom it was written, at the Barbican on Thursday, December 8. These are part of the Barbican's season-long celebration of milestone birthdays for Adams, who turns 70 in February, and Steve Reich and Philip Glass, who both turn 80 this season.

From London, Adams, the LSO, and Josefowicz head to France, where they perform Scheherazade.2 at the Opéra de Dijon next Friday, December 9, and at the Philharmonie de Paris on Saturday, December 10. The brief tour concludes as it began, with Adams and the LSO performing El Niño, at the Philharmonie on Sunday, December 11.

Nonesuch released the world premiere recording of El Niño, featuring singers Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Dawn Upshaw, and Willard White, in 2001. The Los Angeles Times called it "Adams's most powerful and affecting and sublimely assured music." The first recording of Scheherazade.2, with Josefowicz and the St. Louis Symphony led by David Roberston, was released this past September on Nonesuch. NPR said: "The fierceness and vulnerability Leila Josefowicz expresses contributes to an award-caliber performance."

To take home these and other albums in John Adams's Nonesuch catalog, head to the Nonesuch Store, where everything out now is 15% off through the holidays as part of the store's anniversary sale.
