John Adams led the London Symphony Orchestra in the French premiere of his new piece, City Noir, Tuesday night at Salle Playel in Paris. Also on the program were works by Ravel, Stravinsky, and Debussy. It was the first of six concerts celebrating the composer's works in the Salle Pleyel / Cité de la musique series Domain privé John Adams, which continues this weekend. You can read more about the series in a recent Nonesuch Journal article.
The performance was an encore presentation of a concert program Adams and the LSO had premiered at Barbican Hall in London the previous week and which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3's Performance on 3 last night. Presenter Petroc Trelawny introduced the program as "one of the season's most eagerly awaited concerts, the European premiere of a work that has received rave reviews: City Noir by John Adams, a piece inspired by the sassy, savvy energy of Los Angeles."
Among the rave reviews to which Trelawny refers is a four-star review from the Times of London, which calls the performance "brilliant," and another four-star review, from the Evening Standard, which describes City Noir as "a dazzling showpiece."
Hear it for yourself: the complete Barbican concert recording is now available online at bbc.co.uk.
