Jonny Greenwood's Popcorn Superhet Receiver will receive its West Coast premiere tonight at San Francisco's Herbst Theatre. The composer included excerpts from the piece in his score for the Oscar-winning film There Will Be Blood, which you can listen to here. Tonight's concert also marks the San Francisco debut of New York's Wordless Music Series (helmed by Nonesuch's own Ronen Givony), which is presenting the concert and which gave the piece's US premiere in New York earlier this year.
Jonny Greenwood's Popcorn Superhet Receiver will receive its West Coast premiere tonight at San Francisco's Herbst Theatre, the night before the composer will take the stage with Radiohead at the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in Golden Gate Park. Conductor Benjamin Shwartz will lead the Magik*Magik Orchestra in a program that also includes music by Arvo Pärt, John Adams, and others; former Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud will be among the featured soloists.
Greenwood included excerpts from Popcorn Superhet Receiver in two tracks to his score for Paul Thomas Anderson's Oscar-winning film There Will Be Blood: "Henry Plainview" and "Proven Lands." You can listen to those full-length selections and learn more about the film's soundtrack, released on Nonesuch late last year, by clicking here.
Tonight's concert also marks the San Francisco debut of New York's Wordless Music Series (helmed by Nonesuch's own Ronen Givony), which is presenting the concert. Wordless Music presented the US premiere of the Popcorn Superhet Receiver in January at New York's Church of St. Paul the Apostle, paired with Adams's Christian Zeal and Activity and Gavin Bryars's The Sinking of the Titanic.
